April is Irritable Bowel Syndrome ( #IBS) Awareness Month.

IBS is common, affecting a surprising 10-15% of the population.

Many people are unaware that they have a medically recognized disorder
Because it can take up to 6 years for a diagnosis.

Instead, people treat random and never-ending symptoms like gas, #bloating, indigestion, #constipation, diarrhea, and abdominal #pain.

However, did you know that IBS is associated with stress?

The stress hormone cortisol promotes the production of zonulin. Zonulin is a biomarker that disrupts the intestinal lining and causes a “leaky gut.” Zonulin also increases histamine production, causing more inflammation in the gut.

The emotional motor system (EMS) also plays a role in IBS. Emotional states affect the gut’s motility and gut permeability through the hypothalamus, pituitary, and adrenal axis.

Finally, a Dysfunctional migrating motor complex can contribute to dysbiosis, malabsorption, and abdominal visceral hypersensitivity.

There are four types of IBS.

IBS-D: Diarrhea prevalent

IBS-C: Constipation prevalent

IBS-M: Mixed Diarrhea/Constipation

IBS-A: Alternating D and C
