The Hidden Triggers Behind Autoimmune Disease

Understanding Autoimmune Disease: A Naturopathic Perspective

Autoimmune disease is not simply a problem with the immune system. It is a sign that the immune system has become confused.

Instead of protecting you from infections, it mistakenly attacks your own healthy tissues. Depending on where this happens, it may appear as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease (IBS), multiple sclerosis (MS), Sjgren’s syndrome, or many other autoimmune conditions.

From a naturopathic perspective, we ask a different question:

“Why did the immune system lose tolerance in the first place?”

Rather than only suppressing symptoms, we work to identify the underlying factors that may be keeping the immune system in an overactive state while always encouraging patients to continue working with their medical specialists when appropriate.

What can trigger autoimmune disease?

There is rarely one single cause. Most people have a combination of factors that slowly build up over many years.

These may include:

  • Genetics Some people inherit a higher susceptibility such as MTHFR, but genes alone rarely determine your future.
  • Gut health Nearly 70% of the immune system is associated with the gastrointestinal tract. Changes in the gut microbiome and impaired intestinal barrier function can influence immune regulation in susceptible individuals.
  • Chronic stress Long-term stress can affect the nervous system, hormone balance, sleep quality, and immune function.
  • Food sensitivities Certain foods may perpetuate inflammation in some individuals, especially when gut integrity is compromised.
  • Environmental exposures Mold, heavy metals, pesticides, cigarette smoke, air pollution, and other environmental toxicants may contribute to inflammation and immune dysregulation in susceptible people.
  • Biotoxins Chronic exposure to microbial toxins from mold, certain bacteria, or other organisms may place additional stress on the body’s detoxification and immune systems in some individuals.
  • Poor sleep, nutrient deficiencies, infections, lack of movement, and metabolic dysfunction can also contribute to an environment where chronic inflammation persists.

Think of your immune system like a smoke detector.

When it’s functioning normally, it sounds only when there’s a real fire.

In autoimmune disease, the alarm becomes overly sensitive and keeps going off, even when there is no immediate danger.

Our goal isn’t to “boost” the immune system.

That is one of the biggest misconceptions.

The goal is to help regulate the immune system.

That means creating an internal environment where the body is less inflamed, the gut is healthier, the nervous system feels safer, nutrient deficiencies are addressed, and unnecessary inflammatory triggers are reduced.

For many people, this may include:

  • An anti-inflammatory nutrition plan
  • Identifying potential food triggers
  • Supporting gut health and digestion
  • Optimizing sleep and stress management
  • Correcting nutrient deficiencies
  • Reducing environmental toxin exposure when possible
  • Appropriate movement and exercise
  • Targeted supplementation based on clinical evaluation and laboratory findings

No single supplement or diet cures autoimmune disease. Healing usually comes from addressing multiple contributors together.

Why bodywork matters

Many people are surprised that therapeutic bodywork can become an important part of an autoimmune wellness plan.

When you’re living with chronic pain or autoimmune disease, your nervous system often becomes “stuck” in a heightened state of protection. Muscles tighten, breathing becomes shallow, circulation slows, pain becomes amplified, and recovery becomes more difficult.

Clinical therapeutic massage, myofascial techniques, craniosacral therapy, lymphatic techniques, cupping, and other evidence-informed bodywork approaches may help:

  • Reduce stress hormone activity
  • Improve parasympathetic (“rest and digest”) nervous system activity
  • Support vagus nerve function
  • Improve circulation to muscles and connective tissue
  • Reduce muscle guarding and pain
  • Improve joint mobility
  • Promote relaxation and better sleep
  • Help decrease the body’s overall inflammatory burden through stress reduction

Research shows that activation of the vagus nerve influences the body’s natural anti-inflammatory pathways and may help regulate immune activity. While bodywork is not a treatment or cure for autoimmune disease, therapies that encourage parasympathetic activation may complement medical care by improving stress resilience, pain, and quality of life.

At our clinic, we don’t simply ask “Where does it hurt?”

We ask:

Why is your body asking for help?

Our consultations are designed to evaluate lifestyle, nutrition, gut health, environmental exposures, stress, recovery, and other potential contributors so we can develop a personalized wellness plan. Clinical therapeutic bodywork can then be integrated to support your nervous system, reduce pain, and help your body move toward a more restorative state.

Your body isn’t working against you.

It’s trying to tell you something.

Sometimes the first step isn’t fighting your body

it’s finally listening to it.

Your August Wellness Specials + The Hidden Cause of Psoriasis

Dr. Nichelle Pacia NMD @ True Health & Wellness Ctr, LLC.

Psoriasis Isn’t Just Skin Deep

For many people, psoriasis is treated as a skin condition.

But from a naturopathic perspective, the skin is often reflecting what’s happening inside the body.

One of the most important things to understand is that psoriasis is an autoimmune disease. This means the immune system becomes overactive and mistakenly attacks healthy skin cells, leading to inflammation, rapid skin cell turnover, and the characteristic plaques. In some people, the same immune dysfunction can also affect the joints, resulting in psoriatic arthritis.

The question I ask as a Naturopathic Doctor is:

Why is your immune system overreacting?

Instead of only focusing on suppressing symptoms, I want to understand what may be contributing to immune system dysregulation. Every person is different, but potential contributors can include gut health imbalances, intestinal permeability (“leaky gut”), nutrient deficiencies, chronic stress, poor sleep, metabolic dysfunction, infections, food sensitivities, and other environmental toxicity or lifestyle factors.

This is where the gut-skin axis becomes important. The gut and immune system are intimately connected, approximately 70% of the body’s immune cells reside within the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT). When the gut microbiome becomes imbalanced or the intestinal barrier is compromised, inflammatory signals may influence immune function throughout the body, potentially contributing to inflammatory conditions such as psoriasis in susceptible individuals.

At True Health & Wellness Center, I believe in looking for the “why” behind chronic inflammation instead of only asking how to manage it. Yes managing is needed but knowing why is more important therefore we can reduce or stop what is triggering it.

A personalized wellness plan may include:

Naturopathic Consultation to uncover potential triggers and create a personalized wellness strategy.

Comprehensive Wellness & Specialty Laboratory Testing to evaluate nutritional status, inflammation, gut health, food sensitivities, intestinal health, and other biomarkers that may help guide your care.

Therapeutic Massage to activate the parasympathetic (“rest and digest”) nervous system, lower stress hormone activity, improve circulation, and promote relaxation. Because emotional and physical stress are common triggers for psoriasis flares, supporting nervous system regulation can be an important part of an overall wellness plan.

Nutrition and Lifestyle Guidance designed to support a healthy gut microbiome, balanced immune function, Cleanse and detox protocol and long-term wellness.

Every person with psoriasis has a different story.

Rather than simply asking, “How do we suppress the symptoms?” I ask, “Why is your immune system sending these signals in the first place?” What are you exposed to that your immune system is over active? What are you cellular deficiencies that play a role?

Healthy skin often starts by supporting the health of the whole body.

If you’ve been living with psoriasis and are ready for a more comprehensive, root-cause approach to your health, I’d be honored to help you uncover the pieces of your wellness puzzle.
